What is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and when is it used in UAE?
HDD is a trenchless method of installing pipes, cables and ducts underground without excavation. It is used in UAE when the installation must cross beneath a road, highway, railway, waterway, building or environmentally sensitive area. HDD is the preferred method of major UAE authorities including ADNOC, DEWA, TRANSCO, RTA and all municipal utilities.
How long does an HDD crossing take in the UAE?
A typical road crossing (50–150m length, DN100–DN400 pipe) takes 2–5 working days from mobilisation to demobilisation. Longer or larger crossings (300m+, DN800+) typically require 2–4 weeks including pilot bore, reaming passes and pipe pullback.
What is the difference between HDD and NDRC?
NDRC (No-Dig Road Crossing) is the general term used by UAE authorities for any trenchless crossing beneath a road. HDD is one method of achieving an NDRC. Other NDRC methods include auger boring, pipe jacking and microtunnelling. ODC offers all NDRC methods and will recommend the most suitable based on your specific ground conditions, crossing length and pipe diameter.
Do you need a road opening permit for HDD in UAE?
For HDD, the entry and exit pits require a minor excavation permit, but the crossing itself avoids the need for a full road opening permit. This is one of the main cost advantages of trenchless methods — eliminating expensive road closure permits, traffic management costs and reinstatement charges.
What is the maximum length ODC can HDD in a single drive?
Our Ditch Witch JT100 and Vermeer D100x120 rigs are capable of single drives up to 1,200m. The practical maximum depends on ground conditions, pipe diameter and the bore profile. Most UAE projects fall between 50m and 600m.
Can ODC work on ADNOC, DEWA or TRANSCO projects?
Yes. ODC is TAQA and CICA approved, and is currently pursuing ADNOC vendor registration. We have executed projects for TRANSCO, DEWA, SEWA, AADC, Etisalat, du, RTA and multiple UAE municipalities.
